Cloudwatt Technologies is a hands-on consulting practice helping startups and small teams modernize their software and data infrastructure — and leverage AI to deliver more with less.
My name is Tristan Smith, and I'm the founder, lead consultant, and currently the sole operator of Cloudwatt. After graduating from Michigan Tech in 2009 with a degree in Computer Engineering, I've spent over 15 years in the trenches of software development — working at startups and small companies where you have to wear every hat and deliver real value, fast.
Over the years, I've held roles as a frontend developer, backend developer, platform engineer, data engineer, and AI engineer. The common thread? I've been drawn to the hard work of modernization: breaking down monoliths, untangling legacy systems, re-architecting infrastructure, and migrating both codebases and data to more scalable foundations.
In recent years, my focus has shifted toward data engineering and AI — building data pipelines, transforming raw inputs into actionable models, and driving segmentation and intelligence across customer systems. I was fortunate to be involved in generative AI projects early on and have seen firsthand how quickly the space is evolving.
That's why I started Cloudwatt Technologies: to help companies take advantage of modern AI tools without losing sight of the technical fundamentals. AI can be a catalyst for transformation — making replatforming and reinvention not only possible, but practical for teams that previously lacked the resources. But it doesn't replace the hard work of good engineering. You still have to build it. You still have to make it work.
